Fragrant and refreshing peppermint essential oil has long been used as a mood elevating and stress-busting focus aid. As a medicinal plant it has been cultivated since the days of early Egypt and it has a wide range of versatile applications. It can be used to treat headaches—both tension and migraine, it has antibacterial and analgesic properties that make it an excellent healing oil, and it can even be used in a natural mouth rinse to help keep mouths clean and healthy.
It’s no surprise then that several different kinds of peppermints sprays can help out around the house. Peppermint essential oil has potent antibacterial properties and these can be a big help when it comes to eliminating odors and cleaning surfaces around the home.
Surface Spray
Peppermint oil, when combined with other antibacterial and antiseptic surface sprays can produce a safe and natural disinfectant cleaner for many surfaces in your home. Free of dyes and other harmful chemicals, this natural cleanser works to keep countertops, toilet seats, and floors clean and safe for you and your family. To disinfect walls, countertops, doorknobs, cribs, etc. make an equal parts mixture of water and vinegar. Add 5 to 10 drops of pure peppermint essential oil per 16 ounces of mixture to make a safe and effective surface spray. Essential oils and water don’t mix, so shake well before each use.
Fragrance Spray
To capture the revitalizing and refreshing fragrance of peppermint essential oil in an invigorating room spray, simply add 20 drops of pure peppermint essential oil to 8 ounces of distilled water, and add the mixture to a tightly sealing spray bottle. Shake well before each use.
Why distilled water specifically? Distilled water goes through a process that removes everything but the water. That means that all traces of dissolved solids and gasses are essentially cooked out of the water and what’s left is of the highest possible purity. Regular tap water is full of trace minerals and various dissolved solids and gasses. This is important; minerals provide flavor for water and many have a positive impact on our health. In the application of water for fragrance however, some of these trace minerals could negatively affect the purity of the final mixture and therefore the quality of the fragrance. Of course the mixture will still work with standard tap water, and many people may not notice a difference.
Deodorizing Spray
The same formula we used for the fragrance spray can also be implemented as a deodorizing spray for linens, clothing, musty carpets, and pet bedding. Due to the antibacterial properties of peppermint oil, our powerful peppermint spray kills odor causing microbes on contact and can refresh stinky textiles. To crank up the power, substitute 5 drops of eucalyptus essential into the mixture. Eucalyptus oil also has powerful antibacterial properties and augments the already fresh scent.
